"Dark" Series: The German TV Show to Trigger Your Virtual Mind Circulation

"Dark" is a German TV show that first aired back in 2017 and the mystery-based series has since generated highly positive reviews and feedback from both audiences - across the globe - and critics; I was recommended this unique show by my dear friend Heyam who has a palpably good taste in general. "Dark" is undeniably a bundle of triggering and suspense events that occur in the town of "Winden" in Germany that's prominently characterized by its first-of-a-kind nuclear station as a sustainable energy resource for all inhabitants of the small town; the station is also a main factor in the flowing of events from the past to the future. Basically, the main idea bonding all events, characters and timelines is that "All is Connected". Throughout the marvellous show you'll learn to look at the on-going events as if they are indeed trapped within endless circles, all of which are revolving around - and affecting - each other and are causing major changes as well!

"Dark" is an Original Netflix Show

The Official Poster of the German Series

At the very beginning you're introduced to the town of "Winden" through the various lives of the main characters - most notably Jonas Kahnwald whose father committed suicide which is somehow the beginning of the end! The core of the series is based on many theories, historic facts, figures and writings - the grandfather complex, wormholes, and others - which I'm not qualified to dig deep in; however, "Dark" stimulates the viewer's brain and mind energy spontaneously urging him to naturally find justifications for the mysteries taking place through the intense episodes.

Louis Hofmann and Andreas Pietschmann as Jonas Kahnwald

The disappearance of Erik Obendorf starts the first episode of events; the entire town is thus alerted by the sudden disappearance of a young boy which should've prompted all parents and guardians to maintain extra safety measures! On the contrary, the youngest generation of main characters Jonas Kahnwald and his group of friends - Magnus, Martha and Bartosz - head to the forest all alone and there Mikkel Nielsen is lost for good!

After watching the two seasons of "Dark", the idea of timelines as circles - not lines - become clearer and justifiable. When re-watching the German series all over again the characters can initially be described as puzzle pieces that are disarrayed and are all over the place, meaning that each character needs to return to its righteous timeline in order to serve other purposes. For instance, Mikkel is Jonas's father and consequently it was inevitable that he disappears in the first episode for the existence of his son depends on it!

"Dark" First Aired Back in 2017

Claudia Tiedemann told Jonas that she has already seen a world without him and it's not a good one - a world without Jonas is a very questionable statement after revealing the fact that there are indeed alternative worlds in the last episode of season two. So, the solution of preventing Mikkel's disappearance in 2019 seems impractical; Putting each puzzle piece in its right timeline seems to be quite the solution for now. Ulrich Nielsen for instance trapped himself in 1953 which is his rightful place as Mikkel's father and Jonas's grandftather. Still, the inability of the time-traveling characters to fully comprehend their past - or future - tasks, and the loss of other emotionally and physically significant people makes the situation even harder for some of them.

Jonas Kahnwald is the son of Mikkel Nielsen & the grandson of Ulrich Nielsen

Mikkel Nielsen isn't taken seriously when he goes back to 1986 and tells Egon Tiedemann that he's the son of Ulrich Nielsen who's still back then a teenager! Mikkel is however capable of relatively navigating throughout his past journey unlike his father Ulrich - back in 1953 - who was later in time demented by his incapability to save his son!

Young Ulrich & Katharina Nielsen

Through the first season, Jonas Kahnwald is one of our main navigators to fully comprehend what's going on; he goes back to 1986, finds Mikkel, understands the complicated bonds between him and the Nielsen family - Martha is now his aunt - but steps back from rushing to act upon knowing that one action could reshape entire lives!

The theories and historic basics behind "Dark" can be found easily online explaining to you why the circulatory events are justifiable and inevitable. Yet each episode of this outstanding show will definitely force you to willingly analyse and interpret each action as a method of communicating with the past, present and future characters. Of course, the cast of the German series is incredibly good and well-chosen with every actor and actress serving the exact purposes of the writers and directors - Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese - in order to deliver the best possible physical and emotional status of the character/s. Louis Hofmann portrays the highly convincing distressed condition of Jonas Kahnwald brilliantly - after the suicide, Jonas is diligently forcing his mind to justify the fact that his father left him without any explanation but with no avail! It's not until Jonas becomes a time-traveller that he's quite able to grasp the truth and understand the cycles of events in different times.

The Cast of "Dark"

Ulrich Nielsen is also poised well as a lunatic man in the eyes of others as he tries in futility to convince the policeman Egon that he wants to save his child. The third season of "Dark" is expected by June 2020 which is going to bring ambiguous events full circle and perhaps elaborate on the idea of the alternative worlds.
