The Witcher of the Decade: Geralt of Rivia

Netflix released its most anticipated series by far: The Witcher - on 20 Dec 2019 - starring Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan as the main leads of the epic story. The show is simply intriguingly spectacular! The promotional trailers, the introductions of characters, and the entirety of the promotion tour of this fantasy series has indeed helped build the hype and introduce more audience members to the world of Geralt of Rivia: The Witcher. And after finally experiencing season 1, I  can say that the creators, writers and stars of the show did indeed manage to deliver an outstanding story - and an alluring new fantasy series - with a unique plot, attractive storytelling and "veiled" time shifts. "The Witcher" is filled with various interesting elements and themes making it a new fantasy victory; there is drama, romance, defiance, individuality, peculiarity, fights, monsters, humour, charm, allure and many more varied elements that compel the spectator to watch the entire show in a row!

The themes tackled by "The Witcher" are also varied and are very much relevant to the current world but are set in a fictional sphere which is all the more freedom allowing the writers and creators to touch on various topics and society dilemmas without directly signalling out - offending - someone or something. The themes vary from racism, xenophobia, alienation, tyranny, duality, nepotism, injustice, betrayal, cowardice to relationships, family, friends, love, power, character mutation, heroism, alternation and destiny. The fact that the show belongs to the fantasy genre provides a huge amount of freedom to tackle different types of society problems and bring about more themes that may be of importance and relevance to today's world.

From episode 1, you'll immediately realise the high-quality craftsmanship and amount of hard work put into the show. The dialogues are the first propelling element to continue to delve deep into the world of "The Witcher"; when Geralt is talking to Stregobor he says: "Wizards are all the same. You talk nonsense while making wise and meaningful faces. Speak normally." And with that line, Geralt forces Stregobor to ditch his fake demeanour and get to the core of the issue in hand. Witchers are monster hunters; sometimes monsters are human beings, but other times monsters are just monsters.

Throughout the eight episodes, the audience gets to meet all types and sizes of monsters and one learns that Geralt is as human as it can gets unlike what he's trying to portray by channelling a stony exterior and mercilessness in some situations. He can be described as a hero easily but he refuses to let the world know about his true colours because witchers are known and promoted as emotionless and brutal - which they are making Geralt indeed a different kind of a monster hunter. He hunts not only with his physical and magical powers - he hunts with his mind too!

The fights are also something else. The fight in the last 15 minutes of the first episode was the most hyped up and it totally delivered. I was most eager to watch the entire fight scene and I'm now most impressed by it! The choreography of the fights is so well done and highly performed especially after knowing that the cast of "The Witcher" didn't - nearly - depend on any stunt doubles meaning that the actors and actresses did in fact execute their own fights and tricky sword movements on their own - consequently adding more authenticity and credibility to the fight scenes.

About the cast, the three main leads delivered spectacular performances bringing forward the true essence of each character: the fears, strengths, struggles, hopes, obstacles and the dominating, most prominent features. Henry, of course, excelled as usual; Geralt is portrayed strong, unbreakable, unbiased, feared and despised by most. But eventually, his human facets come to light 100% when he meets - and immediately falls for - Yennefer and starts absorbing the reality that his 'child of destiny' might as well be in an impending danger. Freya Allan portrays Cirilla, Geralt's child of destiny, and she did so well presenting how the life of this young princess is tumultuous and scary due to her one of a kind power/s.

But Anya Chalotra is the most outstanding character and performance of all; she stood out the most for her portrayal of the extreme and brutal transformation of Yennefer, from utter weakness to dominance and power. The young actress exceeded expectations and refuted all claims that she can't be Yennefer of Vengerberg; she's the optimal choice for Yennefer, the powerful and alluring sorceress. The journey of Yennefer was most touching and agonising because she was despised and bullied by all, used and manipulated with no regards to her already-torn feelings. When she realises all people around her are but utilitarians and greedy beasts, she sacrifices motherhood in exchange for beauty and power. By time, she starts regretting her decision, believes that she was never given free will or freedom of choice, at the first place.

Chireadan the elf healer questions Geralt's actions asking him: "Why on earth would you enlist the mage's help after my warning? It's as though you thought the scorpion is prettier than a spider because of its lovely tail!" Truth is Geralt and Yennefer are meant for each other, they're tied by destiny. They have a love-hate relationship and no matter what they do to stay away from each other, people linked by destiny will always find a way back ending up together.

The destiny of the three main characters - Geralt, Yennefer and Cirilla - bonds them together and whilst Cirilla manages to find Geralt in the final scene of the last episode, they're left wondering & questioning the whereabouts of Yennefer who was the last standing in the battle field against Nilfgaard. Last but not least, the performances of MyAnna Buring - Tissaia, Jodhi May - Queen Calanthne, and Joey Batey - Jaskier brought different vibes to the new series solidifying the story beautifully. Season 2 of "The Witcher" is expected in 2021 and is going to expand the established fantasy sphere, bringing forward more plot twists elaborating on the different pasts and unified paths of the characters.
